Stanley Park was built out through the 1960s and 70s on the east side of Kitchener between the Conestoga Parkway and the Grand River lowlands, and fifty years on its houses have a predictable set of pest problems. Foundation plantings have grown for decades and the mulch is deep, which is earwig habitat, and the lower streets toward the river and Stanley Park Conservation Area stay damp and carry ants and earwigs at the foundation all summer. Pavement ants nest under the older driveways and walkways and trail into kitchens in spring. Bed bugs are less common here than downtown but do arrive with travel and used furniture. The houses respond well to a season of perimeter work plus the sealing of the soffit vents and the garage corners, and a written plan tells you which. Wildlife in the attic is a different trade.

Open fields. When the crops come off in the fall the field mice lose their cover and food at the same time, and the nearest heated building becomes the target. A house on the edge of a field or beside a hedgerow gets far more pressure than one surrounded by other houses, and the sealing has to be more thorough to hold.
