Doon is the south end of Kitchener and it has three very different pest situations inside a couple of kilometres. These houses also get mice, usually through a garage that was never sealed at the corners, because they back onto open land that used to be farmed and in places still is. The old village of Doon along the Grand River, with its older homes around the pioneer village and the mill sites, has the century-home problems: stone foundations, damp lowland lots near the river and Schneider Creek's outlet, carpenter ants in wet wood, and mice every fall. The third situation is the student housing around Conestoga College's Doon campus — shared rentals, basement units and the apartment blocks along Homer Watson and the college corridor — where bed bugs and German cockroaches arrive with tenant turnover and second-hand furniture and spread between units. Landlords there do best with a standing arrangement and mattress encasements on every bed. The farm edge toward New Dundee and the Wilmot line gets the same heavy fall rodent migration as Breslau. Why are the mice worse in Breslau and Doon than downtown?
Open fields. When the crops come off in the fall the field mice lose their cover and food at the same time, and the nearest heated building becomes the target. A house on the edge of a field or beside a hedgerow gets far more pressure than one surrounded by other houses, and the sealing has to be more thorough to hold.
